Signal 1: Thailand – Subsidy Details Finalized, 60kW+ Fast Charger Demand Rising

Thailand's EV market is already Southeast Asia's largest, accounting for 39% of regional EV sales in 2025 -2. In the first two months of 2026 alone, EV sales reached 38,000 units – putting the country on track for over 200,000 units this year -2.

The charging infrastructure gap, however, remains significant. While Thailand's "30@30" policy targets 30% zero-emission vehicle production by 2030, charger density – especially for fast charging – has lagged behind vehicle sales -2.

The subsidy program we mentioned last month is now in effect. Operators installing 60kW+ DC fast chargers are eligible for up to 200,000 Thai Baht (approximately $5,500 USD) per unit. This direct subsidy changes the math for charging station operators: faster payback periods mean more aggressive deployment.

What this means for equipment suppliers: Operators will prioritize 60kW-180kW DC fast chargers over slower AC units. But speed alone isn't enough. Thailand's tropical climate demands equipment that can handle high ambient temperatures without derating. And certification – TISI for electrical safety – is non-negotiable.

We are also watching the partnership between Spark EV and China Southern Power Grid, which plans to install over 1,000 charging stations in Thailand -2. This kind of large-scale deployment will create steady demand for certified, reliable equipment.

Signal 2: Indonesia – PLN Tender Preparation, SNI Certification Becomes Critical

Indonesia's state utility, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), announced plans to add 2,000 public charging stations in 2026, with a focus on the Trans-Sumatra Highway. The timeline is now clearer: tender documents are expected in the coming months.

The key barrier for equipment suppliers is SNI certification. The process has recently become stricter, with review cycles extending from 3-4 months to 6-8 months. Testing requirements are more rigorous. Local distributors are increasingly firm: no SNI, no quote.

What this means for equipment suppliers: Companies that haven't started the SNI process will miss the first wave of PLN tenders. Those that have – or are preparing – will have a clear advantage. The Indonesian market rewards early preparation.

Additionally, PLN's role as both utility and infrastructure developer means they will prioritize equipment that integrates smoothly with the national grid. Products with smart charging capabilities and grid-friendly features will be favored.

Signal 3: Malaysia – LSS6 Mandates Energy Storage, Creating New Opportunities

This is perhaps the most significant signal of the three.

Malaysia's Large Scale Solar 6 (LSS6) program is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2026, targeting 2GW of solar capacity -1-6. For the first time, the program will require mandatory battery energy storage system (BESS) integration for all winning bids -1-4.

The impact goes beyond the solar sector. When solar projects must include storage, it creates a new ecosystem: storage systems need inverters, inverters need monitoring, and the entire setup creates opportunities for integrated solutions. For charging pile manufacturers, this means more projects where "solar + storage + charging" is not a nice-to-have but a requirement.

Kenanga Research estimates that LSS6 represents approximately RM8 billion (US$1.7 billion) in engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning opportunities – a 40-50% increase from solar-only installations due to battery costs -1.

What this means for equipment suppliers: Companies that offer integrated solutions – not just charging piles, but storage and inverters as well – will be better positioned. The market is moving toward "one-stop shop" providers. This is exactly where Wenzhou Chuhan's product portfolio (charging piles, energy storage systems, inverters) aligns with market direction.

Additionally, Malaysia's MyBEST program – which will award 400MW/1,600MWh of grid-scale storage – is another signal that energy storage is moving from optional to essential

Vietnam Joins the List: A New Policy Signal

While not part of our original three signals, Vietnam deserves attention. On March 31, 2026, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh issued Directive No. 27/CD-TTg, specifically instructing ministries to accelerate EV charging infrastructure development in apartment complexes and urban areas -7-8-9.

Key deadlines:

Ministry of Construction: Complete urban planning standards incorporating charging infrastructure by Q2 2026

Ministry of Industry and Trade: Issue national technical standards for charging equipment safety and efficiency by Q3 2026

Vietnam Electricity: Simplify grid connection procedures and separate meter installation for charging stations -9

Vietnam's approach is methodical: standards first, then deployment. For equipment suppliers, this means the window for preparation is now. Companies that have their certification ducks in a row will be ready when tenders open.

Where We Stand: Wenzhou Chuhan's Progress

These market signals are not abstract news to us. They directly inform our priorities:

Certification: Our SIRIM certification samples for Malaysia are in testing. We are preparing documentation for SNI (Indonesia) and TISI (Thailand). Vietnam's new standards, once issued, will be next.

Product adaptation: Our DC fast chargers (60kW-180kW) are being tested for tropical conditions – high ambient temperatures, high humidity, and salt spray for coastal installations. Our IP66-rated enclosures and intelligent thermal management are designed for these environments.

Integrated solutions: With Malaysia's LSS6 requiring storage, our ability to offer charging piles alongside energy storage systems and inverters becomes a competitive advantage. We are not just a charging pile supplier – we provide DC-side solutions.

Local partnerships: We are building relationships with distributors and project developers across the region. On-the-ground presence matters, and our Malaysia trip last month was part of this commitment.

What's Next

April is shaping up to be an active month for Southeast Asia's charging infrastructure market. Tenders will open. Standards will be finalized. Projects will move forward.

For equipment suppliers, the message is clear: preparation pays. Certification takes time. Product adaptation takes testing. Local relationships take building.

We started our Southeast Asia focus months ago. We are deepening it now. And we will continue to share what we see – market by market, signal by signal.
